Perweb.nsf error in the Notes client
I didn’t see much out there on this topic other than one thread I was lucky enough to come upon on the Notes 6 forums, so I wanted to share this Notes client wierdness with you.
The problem we were having was two-fold. The first issue was that a user could receive HTML email, but every graphic in those emails had a red X in it’s place. Wierd enough on its own. The second issue is that trying to open certain HTML emails would give a ‘Cannot Open the Web Navigator database’ error.
Here’s how you remedy both problems.
- Find and delete your perweb.nsf database
- Open Notes and create a NEW perweb.nsf database from the Personal Web Navigator template
- Open your location document
- On the Internet Browser tab, change the browser to say Notes
- Set ‘Retrieve/Open pages’ to ‘from the Notes workstation’
- Save and Close your location doc
- Open one of the problem emails
- It will now work
- Go back to your location doc
- Change the browser setting back to the browser of your choice
That’s it. Very bizarre that Notes rendering requires the perweb.nsf database. HTML rendering has always been less than stellar in the Notes client, and here’s probably one of the reasons why.

Maybe I’m missing something — but it didn’t allow me to view a trouble email, I still have the Xed out images? In the second step you say to “Open Notes and create a NEW perweb.nsf database from the Personal Web Navigator template”. Where is the Personal Web Navigator template? Or is making the changes, and saving, in the Internet Browser tab (from the Location Page) the template you are referencing?
Thanks

To create a new Personal Web Navigator database, do the following:
* File, Database, New
* Leave Local as your server
* Check the box at the bottom that says Show Advanced Templates
* In the list of templates at the bottom you will see Personal Web Navigator now in the list
* Highlight it
* Enter perweb.nsf as the file name
* Enter whatever you want as the Title
* Click OK
If it doesn’t exist already, it will create it. If it DOES already exist, it will ask you if you want to replace it. Go ahead and say YES.
Once that’s done, you have a new perweb.nsf in place. Just follow the rest of the instructions and you should be good. If it still doesn’t work for you, please let me know and leave your email address so I can contact you.
Good Luck,
Grey

Thanks for the quick response, I did learn something new , but alas, it didn’t work . I still get the red, Xed-out images.
I have a group of folks that are offsite from our main office, that I help — I am VERY new at Lotus, and are Lotus Admin is at corp. office miles away. I have most of us upgraded to 6.5.4, and ever since, I have had several users asking why the images no longer show in emails. So I asked the L Admin for help – I must have stumped him as it appears he gave up on it? So, I was really excited to see your fix online.
Anyway, if you can contact me with more ideas I would greatly appreciate it!! I’ll give my alternate email, rather than my company address, to protect myself .
Sincerely,
Jodi

Awesome! Works like a charm. I too started encountering this prob after I upgraded to R6 client… and now its fixed. Thanks a bunch.
Jodi, did you try all the steps mentioned in greyhawk’s original post, ie, after creating a new perweb.nsf, did you change the browser under location and other stuff… In my first attempt, I missed out the browser step and the problem persisted. Thereafter once I changed the browser settings, it worked :). Did you try this too:

Open your location document

On the Internet Browser tab, change the browser to say Notes

Set ‘Retrieve/Open pages’ to ‘from the Notes workstation’

Save and Close your location doc
