IT Week: Why Notes Sends Me Into Orbit
Okay, when this came through my RSS reader, I just had to chuckle. Lem Bingley of IT Week rants on his blog about a reason for hating Notes. That reason? Because the Sent view is called Sent. Yup, he is incensed that the Sent view is called Sent and he sometimes gets it confused with the Send button. He would prefer that it’s called Outbox. [sigh]
Nevermind that pretty much every single email client in existence calls it sent, and that an outbox is a temporary place for things to reside until they actually LEAVE.
He also rips on Notes for not going through Use Case analysis (citing Wikipedia) to see how users really use a product. So I rightfully pointed him to Mary Beth’s blog and suggested he move off of Notes 6.5 and to Notes 8.

And let’s not forget that his screenshot is from R5.

That’s hilarious.
It’s what I would call making a fool of yourself publicly.

I don’t mind people calling me a fool, or disagreeing with my opinion that Notes is a bit of a mess (and continues to be – button position is largely unchanged in R8, I note), or suggesting I should have upgraded when that’s my employer’s decision, but what is wrong with citing Wikipedia? I know it’s not always reliable but it gives an OK account of use-case analysis.

Hi Lem,
Thanks for actually stopping by. I don’t have a problem with Wikipedia at all. I cite it all the time and I think it’s a fabulous resource.
To me, your reference to it came across as trying to educate IBM as to what use-case analysis was. I took it to be kind of a sarcastic slap at them, so that’s why I called it out in my post. It was just funny to me after all of the analysis that has gone into Notes 8 over the last couple years of its design. That’s why I pointed you to Mary Beth.
Also, please note that in my post on your blog, and my post here, I never called you names. Sorry that it devolved to that over on your blog, that was never my intent.
Anyway, I hope you’ll get a chance to see how much better Notes has become.
Take Care,
Grey
