A very funny take on the Twitter outages.

Last night, David Cook was crowned this season’s new American Idol. This was despite the fact that the judges had all but given the title to David Archuleta the night before. In fact pretty much all the pundits really thought that the younger David would walk away with the title. I couldn’t be happier that David Cook won instead.
Now it’s not that I don’t think Archie is deserving, far from it. He has the beautiful voice of a young prodigy. But to me, he was more of a Josh Groban-type operatic singer rather than a pop/rock star. His vocals are impeccable, but he really had no stage presence and sometimes I didn’t believe the emotion in the songs. I think the main reason for this is his age (17). The world hasn’t “happened” to him yet. He’s been sheltered in his Dad’s little Stage Dad competition world where he couldn’t be a kid.
This is where I feel bad for young David. His Dad appears to be every bit as bad and pushy as the worst stage parents. He was bad enough that the Idol folks banned him from going backstage and to rehearsals for the last couple weeks. I think his Dad is damaging him, and we’ll see problems with young David in the future. Stage parents suck. Despite all of this, I think losing might actually do little David some good. He finally has some pain to tuck away and grow upon. It’s not a young-love heartbreak-type of pain that shapes the rest of us, but at least it’s something.
Anyway, I’m thrilled that Cook won for the simple fact that he can already walk on stage as a rockstar. When he sings in a controlled manner, his vocals can be every bit as tender and melodic as the best of them. When he straps on the guitar and rocks out you rock along. When he puts emotion into the music, you believe every damn world. You can tell he has the pain to grow upon. He was a musician and an entertainer rather than just a singer. He didn’t do any R&B tinged sappy ballads, in fact he even made a Mariah Carey song one of his own. He deserves this, much to the chagrin of all the 12 year olds that melt every time Archie says “gosh.”
So to me, I think this was a win for those of us in the older demographic that wanted a really good rocker type rather than a doe-eyed balladeer. And it wasn’t just a minor win, Cook won by 12 million votes. There were a total of 97 million cast. Now I could go into a whole diatribe about how I wish people would vote in our general election as fervently as they do for Idol, but I’ll save that for another time. The point is, us old folks won damnit. Now all you whippersnappers can get the hell off my lawn.
As many others have posted, Gary Gygax died earlier this week. For those who still don’t know, Gary was one of the creators of the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game.
It’s sad news when one of your childhood heroes dies. Especially one that influenced you so much.
When I got into Dungeons & Dragons, it really opened my imagination. As an only child with a lot of time on my hands, I would pour through the books. I would create my own worlds, map them out and create elaborate stories around them. I would role-play my characters with my friends and really try to act out what the characters would do.
The game helped create and build my imagination, my creativity, my writing, my analytical side and my acting skills. I can attribute all of those skills as something that increased exponentially because of D&D and Gary Gygax.
In fact my online persona of Greyhawk is taking directly from the World of Greyhawk mythos that Gygax created. (the 68 is from George Carlin if you know the joke.)
So to say Gygax influenced me is probably an understatement. Even though I haven’t played in years, there isn’t one of those skills that were not enhanced by Mr. Gygax. It’s like he was a +2 ring of intelligence for me. And for that I am so grateful.
Thanks for everything Mr. Gygax. Goodbye, your contributions were more than you probably knew.
Congrats to the New York Giants on their Super Bowl win, and for knocking off the New England Videoographers. So, the 1972 Miami Dolphins are STILL the only undefeated team in NFL history! As a Dolphin fan, I don’t have a lot to cling to, so I’m really enjoying this!!! WOO HOO!!!!!

I took pictures for a ton of people that didn’t have their camera with them, so I will make them available in a flickr set here. Going to try to upload a bunch tonight while I sleep, so hopefully they’ll be available soon. If not, it might take a couple of days before they get out there. I’ll try to get them there asap. You should have the ability to download full rez versions. If not, let me know and we’ll work it so you can get them.
Well, Santa was good to our family this year and brought us the Wii. The wife and I were excited by the prospect of the Wii because we thought it was perfect for my daughters (aged 4 and 6.) Well we couldn’t have been more right, the Wii was a huge hit with the girls yesterday.
The console comes with Wii Sports bundled in. So you get Bowling, Golf, Baseball, Tennis and Boxing. And man, does boxing make an impression. We had our whole family along with Grandma and Grandpa playing everything and it was a riot. But boxing was the true workout. You dodge and punch and block your opponent in the air, and you really get winded. The funny thing about boxing was that my four year-old beat EVERYONE she played. Repeatedly. In fact, she still hasn’t lost. And trust me, after getting knocked around a couple times I tried my damnedest to beat her to no avail. It was amazing. My little girl, my little princess, simply beat the living snot out of everyone. It was pretty hilarious.
I have to say I really like the bowling too. It is the perfect type of game to showcase the motion sensing characteristics of the Wii controllers. My eldest asked the wife to play today, so the girls have been perfecting their bowling ball spin. My guess is that they are going to dominate this hard-core gamer for quite some time.
All I know is that today I hurt… bad. My arm, shoulder blades and back are all killing me. So are my cheeks, but that’s just because I can’t wipe the smile off my face!
In addition to the aforementioned toilet buying, we celebrated our anniversary by going to the movies and seeing Knocked Up.
We figured a little romantic comedy would be a good thing on our anniversary, and we were right. The movie was great. And it’s great for guys and girls alike as it really isn’t a chick flick or a guy flick, it’s a really cool combination of the two. The insanely beautiful Katherine Heigel and the insanely funny Seth Rogen really have great chemistry together and that makes the movie work. They touch on a lot of things that couples go through, and even hit married life and having kids. I think if you are married with a couple kids, this movie will really hit home for you too.
People are comparing it to The 40 Year Old Virgin, and I can see that, but I actually liked Knocked Up better. If you want a really funny movie to see this weekend, go out and see it. It’s Greyhawk approved!
Well, the Microsoft Zune launched yesterday, and unfortunately I’m not as enthusiastic as I used to be. There was so much potential that I think MS squandered away…at least on version 1.0.
You see, MS abandoned the one main thing that gave it an advantage over Apple, it’s not using its own PlaysForSure DRM scheme. The Zune is using it’s own DRM. So music from the Zune store can only play on the Zune player. Also, none of the PlaysForSure partners tracks will play on the Zune. Microsoft has become Apple. [sigh].
I know WHY they did it, they followed the successful model of the iPod. That doesn’t mean I have to like it. Basically, by having the one store, one player approach, they can make the ease of use the main feature. The two just work together seamlessly. They are betting (like Apple proved) that if you make it easy and sexy enough, you will win normal users. You just won’t win over people like me.
I like choice. I like the ability to choose different vendors to buy from (for both the hardware and the music) and I like to be able to play my legally purchased (or rented) music anywhere I want. Both Apple and MS limit this, and because of it, I have stopped buying music with restrictive DRM. I happily subscribe to Yahoo Music Unlimited instead.
All of this said, I AM glad that MS got into the market. Hopefully it will force some more innovation on Apple’s part and cause some price wars. We can only win in the end. Until then I’ll stick with my Creative Zen Vision!
Okay, it’s election day in our country, a big day to see who keeps control of congress, and what do I see when I go to CNN? BREAKING NEWS that Britney Spears has filed for divorce from KFed. WHY IN THE HELL IS THIS CONSIDERED NEWS!!!!!!!! ON FUCKING CNN OF ALL PLACES TOO!!!!
I hate, hate, hate the media. And I hate the sheep that lap this entertainment news crap up. Damnit I need a drink….
Well after last week we’re down to the final four. And my predictions were pretty spot on. I just figured there would be two guys and two girls left rather than three guys and a girl. Oh well. Pretty close though.
At this point I have to say that the edge goes to Toby in my opinion. He’s got good original songs, sounded good on the Supernova track and seems like he has a pretty clear voice. He still doesn’t have an “edge” or quite the stage presense that you like to see, but that could come around.
As for Dilana, she shot herself in the foot so much that I don’t think there is any way she’ll be the lead singer of Supernova. Magni is great, but probably too polished and not quite dirty or edgy enough for those guys.
Lukas is still my favorite, and I look forward to seeing music from him going forward. The problem he has is that his Canadian accent is so thick that it’s sometimes hard to understand what he’s singing. I’d love to see him head up Supernova, he’s got the edge, the dangerousness, and stage chops to really front the band. I just don’t know if it’ll happen.
So, here’s hoping for Lukas, but I’ll be happy if Toby takes it home too. Magni in third, Dilana in fourth 🙂
My wife so called the Toby thing too…since week one, she said it’ll be him.
Couple more days until we find out!
